The Beyond Our Bubble 2010 Teen Challenge provided a team of six high school students the opportunity to bring about lasting, personalized and positive change in the lives of those less fortunate.  The team worked throughout the spring to master critical skills and develop networks, all leading up to a two-week Final Challenge project in the summer (think Extreme Home Makeover / Oprah’s Big Give teen-style).

Team Meetings:
The team met twice monthly on Sunday afternoons for trainings, exercises and networking activities providing the knowledge and skills needed to successfully and creatively help others. This included trainings on project organization, resource development, networking and communications. These workshops were discussion based, and often peer-led so that teammates could learn from one another as well as community experts. In addition to these trainings, the team had the opportunity to practice their new skills through mini simulations, allowing them to further develop their abilities and teamwork. Additionally, team members ventured into the community to build critical connections with local businesses and organizations.

Outside the Bubble:
The Team participated in a variety of community-based volunteer efforts during their training.  In addition to the more traditional service projects, the team explored how to make giving a part of their daily lives through Acts of Kindness. These activities demonstrated how giving can be fun and easy, as well as bring a smile to people's faces.

The Final Challenge:
The entire experience culminated in the summer with the Final Teen Challenge. After months of trainings, networking, service, and fun, the team was ready to take on this two-week endeavor. During the Final Challenge, the team was presented with a carefully-selected family in need. The Team then developed creative, meaningful, and personalized ways of helping the family.  Under the constraints of time, the teens worked fervently around the clock on projects ranging from building raised garden beds and painting, to bringing in professional builders, flooring experts, and electricians.  They worked with Team Depot to complete many of the projects, and reached out to the community to provide the family with a wonderful vacation in the Portland area.  The teens involved their community through having a booth at the Centennial Celebration, and inviting their peers to help on special volunteer days.
